Why this list?

I’m not trying to rewrite education (even though I think it’s broken the way it exists today in the US with unbalanced debt-to-job expectations). Instead, I’d like to think about the fundamental lessons and personal development that naturally occurs outside of the classroom or when you holistically combine multiple school subjects. Each of these areas have their own value and level of expertise while fitting into societal norms.

  1. Culture – International, customs, domestic, religion
  2. Community – Collaboration, volunteerism, socialization
  3. Health – Self care, exercise, grooming, meditation
  4. Food – Joy of nourishment, eating, and tasting
  5. Cooking – Joy of sharing and creation, baking (independence of stretching the dollar and economics of cooking, healthy cooking )
  6. Learning – Process of studying and researching, memorization, organization and structure, what questions to ask, posing questions, searches of tools, approach and “showing your work”, effort of discovering, persistence and utilization of resources, curiosity across, skepticism, exhausting routes
  7. Teaching – Sharing what’s learned, mentorship, leadership
  8. Relationships – Maintaining, nourishing, fostering, self respect, approaching people, listening, grow a relationship, best friends, social elitism
  9. Love – Feelings together, dependency, need
  10. Empathy / sympathy – Other’s situations, compassion
  11. Social etiquette – Acceptable manners
  12. Economics – World relationships and balances, countries, civic duty and voting
  13. Financials – Investments, value of dollar, savings
  14. History – Past mistakes, past successes, learning from existing work
  15. Ethics/morality – Rights and wrongs, perspective, honesty, peer pressure, failure, confidence
  16. Hobbies – Fun and passion, acumen and expertise, building
  17. Music – Singing and enjoying the medium, playing instruments, detail and skill, rote practice and determination, expression and enjoyment
  18. Scientific process – Hypothesis, experimentation, analysis, math and statistics
  19. Routines and systems – Micro and macro tasking, time management
  20. Dreaming and goal setting – Larger perspective and planning
  21. Productivity and prioritization – Importance of tasks and who’s asking for them
  22. Sex, drugs, and rock and roll – Facts about them, temptation
  23. Singularity, relevance in the world – Infinity, universe, multiverse, worlds afar
  24. Languages – Communication, techniques
  25. Hand eye coordination – Not just sports but general physical ability
  26. Teamwork – Group accomplishments, collaboration
  27. Humor – Jokes, when to laugh, laughing together
  28. Writing – Expression and creativity, reading for fun, colorful descriptions, future predictions
  29. Futurism – Technology, coding, design
  30. Home economics – Cleanliness, hygiene
